Principal's November Newsletter
Dear Hidden Valley Parents & Guardians,
November is a time for Thanksgiving, so let me begin by thanking all of the parents who follow the traffic and parking guidelines so that teachers and staff have a place to park when they arrive at school. Unfortunately, some parents are still parking in the staff lots. This is a problem because it can cause a safety issue when a teacher or staff member is not in place for his/her assigned supervision duty. It also causes teachers to fall behind in their day when they have to spend extra time driving around looking for a place to park. Please help out by only using nearby street parking, or parking in the Hidden Valley Park parking lot behind the school.
Thank you also to all the parents who make sure their children are at school on time each day prepared to learn. Attendance data reveals the following facts:
•Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
• Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
• By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
• By 9th grade, regular attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
• Missing 10%, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
• Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
• Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.
It is also important to note that a school’s funding depends on regular attendance. Schools lose funding each day that a student is absent, regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused. Last year, the total amount of money lost among elementary schools in MDUSD totaled over $110,000. Of course if your child is ill, s/he should stay home and get well. At all other times children need to arrive at school on time and ready to learn.
We are fortunate to have the iReady instructional program available again this year for your child to use at home. Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break will be especially great times for your child to use the program to maintain and build academic skills in both math and language arts. To access instruction at home, your child can log on to iReady by going to https://login.i-ready.com/, or by going to the Hidden Valley website, and scrolling down to the Homepage Locker. Teachers have given out students’ usernames and passwords for the site. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about using iReady.

On behalf of all the staff at Hidden Valley, I would like to thank you for all of your support. It is our pleasure and privilege to teach and spend time with your child(ren) each day.
