College Park Visit:

 

On Monday, September 30, 2019, I had the pleasure of visiting College Park High School (CPHS) for a few hours. I was able to speak to students, meet staff members, and acquire and palpably feel the positive vibe that exists at CPHS.  Each of the students I engaged with were engaged in relevant work, connecting to their instructors in meaningful conversations and tasks that were on point, and important to acquiring new and relevant skills. Principal of CPHS Joe Alvarez and I stopped to speak to students who were already planning their college careers, and within those conversations they reported that they truly enjoy being part of CPHS. The leadership class was busy preparing for this weekend’s Homecoming celebration, and facilitated lunch-time activities that brought students together, truly enhancing the school’s culture! It was so encouraging to see literally thousands of students working together, enjoying each other’s company, getting along, and truly demonstrating respect and kindness with each other during their lunch-time activities. Well done Falcon’s!

Proud to Have Served in the Human Resources Arena:

 

This week, after work on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, I traveled to Long Beach, California, to attend the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), Personnel Institute. As many of you may know, I spent the last thirteen years working in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District’s Human Resources Department. Prior to leaving the District, my team nominated me for the prestigious ACSA Ray Curry Award for my work in HR. Ray Curry is known as being a significant leader in this area over several decades. Well, I was selected by the ACSA’s Human Resources Council as the recipient of this award, and was joined by my brother, Dr. Tomas Martinez, and sister-in-law, Teresa Martinez, as I received this recognition. I was able to speak to the three-hundred attendees and shared that I was proud to be in their company, and felt that my mantra of “Keep people first in mind,” especially when working with adults, served me well in the capacity as a Human Resources Official. I ended by encouraging this group of hard-working professionals to keep their integrity in all they do, and keep striving for improvement to their systems working with people, because it is those people, that directly work with students across California.

Family engagement is an essential strategy for building pathways to college and career readiness and is an essential component of a systems approach to improving outcomes for all students.  Mt.
